What is irregular about conocer
Conocer is irregular only where the ending starts with o or a: there the stem adds z before c. That gives yo conozco in the present and the whole present subjunctive (conozca, conozcas, conozca, conozcamos, conozcáis, conozcan), along with the commands built on it: conozca, no conozcas. Everything else is a regular -er verb: conoces, conoce, conocí, conoció, conocía, conoceré, conocido.
Conjugated the same way: reconocer, parecer, nacer, ofrecer, crecer, agradecer.
Common mistakes with conocer
Conozco que vive aquí. / Conozco nadar.→Sé que vive aquí. / Sé nadar.
Facts and skills take saber. Conocer is for people, places and things you are familiar with.
Conozco tu hermano.→Conozco a tu hermano.
When the object is a specific person, Spanish puts a before it (the personal a). Places take none: Conozco Madrid.
yo conoco, yo conozo→yo conozco
In the present only the yo form adds z: conozco. The other persons are regular: conoces, conoce, conocemos.
When to use conocer
Conocer is "to know" in the sense of being familiar with a person, a place or a thing; knowing a fact or how to do something is saber. In the preterite conocer usually means "to meet for the first time": La conocí en Madrid. With a place it means you have been there: ¿Conoces Sevilla?
