What is irregular about escribir

Every conjugated form of escribir is regular and follows vivir: escribo, escribes, escribe, escribimos, escribís, escriben; preterite escribí, escribiste, escribió. The one exception is the past participle escrito (not "escribido"), which is needed in every compound tense: he escrito, había escrito. For nosotros the present and the preterite coincide: escribimos. The gerund is regular: escribiendo.

Conjugated the same way: describir, inscribir, suscribir.

Common mistakes with escribir

  • he escribido he escrito

The participle is irregular and short: escrito. The same goes for the whole family: descrito, inscrito, suscrito.

  • Escribo mi madre. Le escribo a mi madre.

The person you write to is an indirect object: it takes a and is normally doubled by le or les.

  • Lo escribí por mano. / Lo escribí de mano. Lo escribí a mano.

"By hand" is a mano: the preposition is a, not por or de. The same a appears in escribir a máquina, "to type".

When to use escribir

Escribirse is how Spanish talks about spelling: ¿Cómo se escribe tu apellido? means "How do you spell your surname?"

Escribir in sentences

Le escribo un correo a mi jefe.
I'm writing an email to my boss.
Ayer escribí tres páginas.
I wrote three pages yesterday.
Te he escrito un mensaje.
I've written you a message.
Te escribiré cuando llegue.
I'll write to you when I arrive.
Escribe tu nombre aquí.
Write your name here.

How to remember escribir

escribir [ehs-kree-BEER] sounds like the English “a scribe here”. Picture this:

“A scribe here!” — the scribe writes your words faster than you say them.

A sound-alike plus a vivid scene is the keyword method: the sound pulls the meaning along. How it works.
