What is irregular about leer
Leer takes the regular -er endings, but its stem ends in a vowel, and that affects the spelling. An unstressed i between two vowels is written y: leyó, leyeron in the preterite, the gerund leyendo and the whole imperfect subjunctive (leyera, leyeras…). A stressed i after e carries a written accent: leíste, leímos, leísteis, leído. The present (leo, lees, lee) and the present subjunctive (lea) are fully regular.
Conjugated the same way: creer, poseer.
Common mistakes with leer
leió, leieron→leyó, leyeron
Spanish does not write an unstressed i between two vowels; it becomes y. The same happens in the gerund: leyendo, not "leiendo".
leiste, leimos, leido→leíste, leímos, leído
Without the accent, e and i would merge into one syllable. The accent shows that the i is stressed and pronounced separately: le-í-do.
Ella le mucho. / Ellos len.→Ella lee mucho. / Ellos leen.
The stem is le- and the ending adds a second e, so both are written and pronounced: lees, lee, leemos, leen.
