What is irregular about repetir
It is the second e that changes to i; the first one always stays. Under stress in the present: repito, repites, repite, repiten, but repetimos, repetís. The i also appears in the third person of the preterite (repitió, repitieron), in the whole present subjunctive (repita, repitamos, repitáis), in the imperfect subjunctive (repitiera) and in the gerund repitiendo. The imperfect, future and conditional are regular.
Conjugated the same way: pedir, servir, competir, vestir.
Common mistakes with repetir
repitiré, repitiría→repetiré, repetiría
The future and conditional are built on the infinitive, which has e: repetir + é. The i of repito does not carry over.
Repite, por favor. (a usted)→Repita, por favor.
Repite is the tú command. To someone you address as usted, say repita or ask ¿Puede repetir?
Repitelo, por favor.→Repítelo, por favor.
A pronoun attached to the command does not move the stress, so it has to be marked with an accent: repite → repítelo, repita → repítalo.
When to use repetir
At the table repetir also means "to have a second helping": ¿Puedo repetir? At school, repetir curso is "to repeat a year".
