What is irregular about servir
Servir follows the pedir pattern, e → i. The i appears under stress in the present (sirvo, sirves, sirve, sirven, but servimos, servís), in the third person of the preterite (sirvió, sirvieron), in the whole present subjunctive (sirva, sirvamos, sirváis), in the imperfect subjunctive (sirviera) and in the gerund sirviendo. The imperfect, future and conditional are regular: servía, serviré, serviría.
Conjugated the same way: pedir, repetir, vestir, medir.
Common mistakes with servir
Este cuchillo sirve a cortar pan.→Este cuchillo sirve para cortar pan.
What something is used for is introduced by para: servir para + infinitive or noun.
Están serviendo la cena.→Están sirviendo la cena.
The gerund has i, like the third person of the preterite: sirviendo, sirvió. The participle keeps e: servido.
sirvimos, sirvís→servimos, servís
In the present, nosotros and vosotros are stressed on the ending and keep e; servimos is also the preterite form. The i belongs to the subjunctive: sirvamos, sirváis.
When to use servir
Besides "to serve" food or customers, servir means "to be of use": No sirve para nada is "It's useless", and ¿Te sirve? asks "Is this any good to you?" Servirse is "to help yourself" to food or drink.
