What is irregular about oír

The yo form of the present is oigo, and -ig- runs through the present subjunctive: oiga, oigas, oiga. A y appears between vowels: oyes, oye, oyen in the present, oyó, oyeron in the preterite and the gerund oyendo. Where the i is stressed it takes a written accent: oímos, oís, oíste, oído. The future and conditional are regular but lose the accent of the infinitive: oiré, oiría.

Common mistakes with oír

  • yo oyo yo oigo

In the present the y belongs to oyes, oye and oyen only; the yo form takes -ig-: oigo.

  • oió, oieron oyó, oyeron

An unstressed i between two vowels is written y, as in leyó and leyeron.

  • oir, oido, oimos oír, oído, oímos

A stressed i next to o needs a written accent; without it the two vowels would be read as one syllable.

When to use oír

Oír is "to hear", to perceive a sound; escuchar is "to listen", to pay attention. Oye (to tú) and oiga (to usted) are the everyday way of getting someone's attention, like "hey" and "excuse me".

Oír in sentences

No te oigo bien.
I can't hear you very well.
¿Oíste lo que dijo?
Did you hear what she said?
Desde mi habitación oía el mar.
From my room I could hear the sea.
Oye, ¿tienes un minuto?
Hey, have you got a minute?
Habla más alto para que te oigan.
Speak up so they can hear you.
