What is irregular about almorzar

Two things change. The stressed o becomes ue in the present: almuerzo, almuerzas, almuerza, almuerzan, but almorzamos, almorzáis. And z is written c before e: almorcé in the preterite (then almorzaste, almorzó) and the whole present subjunctive — almuerce, almuerces, almorcemos, almorcéis. The imperfect, future and conditional are regular: almorzaba, almorzaré, almorzaría.

Conjugated the same way: forzar, reforzar.

Common mistakes with almorzar

  • almuerzamos, almuerzáis almorzamos, almorzáis

Ue appears only where the stress falls on the stem. In the nosotros and vosotros forms it moves to the ending, so the stem keeps its o. For the same reason the preterite has no ue: almorzó.

  • almuerze, almuerzen almuerce, almuercen

The present subjunctive and the usted commands need both changes at once: ue under stress and c before e. The sound stays the same and only the letter changes, as in almorcé.

When to use almorzar

In most of Latin America almorzar is the usual verb for the midday meal. In Spain that meal is more often comer, and almorzar can also mean a mid-morning snack.
