What is irregular about dormir
The stressed o becomes ue in the present: duermo, duermes, duerme, duermen, but dormimos, dormís. Because it is an -ir verb, dormir has a second change, o → u: in the third person of the preterite (durmió, durmieron), in the nosotros and vosotros forms of the present subjunctive (durmamos, durmáis), in the whole imperfect subjunctive (durmiera) and in the gerund durmiendo. The participle dormido is regular.
Common mistakes with dormir
dormió, dormieron→durmió, durmieron
In the third person of the preterite o narrows to u. The other persons keep o: dormí, dormiste, dormimos, dormisteis.
Estoy dormiendo.→Estoy durmiendo.
The gerund takes the same u as durmió. The participle does not change: he dormido.
Anoche dormí a las once.→Anoche me dormí a las once.
Dormir is "to sleep" for a stretch of time. The moment of falling asleep needs the reflexive dormirse: me dormí, se durmió.
When to use dormir
"To be asleep" is estar dormido, "to take a nap" is dormir la siesta, and "to be sleepy" uses a different verb altogether: tener sueño.
