What is irregular about poner
The yo form of the present is pongo, and the g runs through the present subjunctive: ponga, pongas, ponga. The preterite uses the stem pus- with unaccented endings: puse, pusiste, puso. The future and conditional replace the e of the infinitive with d: pondré, pondría. The past participle is puesto and the tú command is pon.
Conjugated the same way: componer, proponer, suponer, imponer, exponer.
Common mistakes with poner
he ponido→he puesto
The participle is irregular: puesto. The same goes for the compounds: compuesto, propuesto, supuesto.
poní, ponió→puse, puso
The preterite does not take the regular -er endings; it switches to the stem pus-.
Pongo la chaqueta.→Me pongo la chaqueta.
Putting clothes on yourself takes the reflexive ponerse. Without me the sentence means you are putting the jacket somewhere.
When to use poner
Poner is "to put", and also to set the table (poner la mesa) and to switch something on (poner la tele, poner música). Reflexive ponerse is "to put on" clothes and, with an adjective, "to become": ponerse nervioso, ponerse rojo.
