What is irregular about salir
Salir is irregular in three places. The yo form of the present is salgo, and that g carries into the whole present subjunctive: salga, salgas, salga. The future and conditional replace the i of the infinitive with d: saldré, saldría. The tú command is the short form sal. The preterite (salí, saliste, salió) and the imperfect (salía) are regular.
Conjugated the same way: sobresalir.
Common mistakes with salir
saliré, saliría→saldré, saldría
The future and conditional swap the i of the infinitive for d: saldré, saldrás, saldrá.
Salgo la casa a las ocho.→Salgo de casa a las ocho.
The place you leave is introduced with de: salir de casa, salir del trabajo.
¡Sale de aquí!→¡Sal de aquí!
The tú command is the short form sal. Sale is the present tense: "he or she leaves".
When to use salir
Salir is to go out of or leave a place (salir de casa), to go out socially (salir con amigos) and to turn out (salir bien, salir mal). Leaving something behind is a different verb, dejar: Dejé las llaves en casa.

How to remember salir
salir[sah-LEER] sounds like the English “sailor”. Picture this:
The sailor leaves at dawn: the harbor yawns, the seagulls take attendance.
A sound-alike plus a vivid scene is the keyword method: the sound pulls the meaning along. How it works.
