How hablar is conjugated
Hablar is completely regular, which is why textbooks use it as the model for all -ar verbs: drop -ar and add -o, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an in the present and -é, -aste, -ó, -amos, -asteis, -aron in the preterite. For nosotros the present and the preterite are the same word (hablamos), so ayer or ahora has to tell them apart. Learn this table once and the same endings work for thousands of verbs: trabajar, estudiar, comprar, llamar.
Conjugated the same way: trabajar, estudiar, comprar, llamar, tomar.
Common mistakes with hablar
hablo (él, ayer)→habló
The accent changes the person and the tense: hablo is "I speak", habló is "he or she spoke". The same goes for hable (subjunctive) and hablé ("I spoke").
Hablo el español.→Hablo español.
After hablar the name of a language normally goes without an article.
tú hablastes→tú hablaste
The tú form of the preterite never ends in -s, even though tú ends in -s in every other tense (hablas, hablabas, hablarás).
