What is irregular about perder
The e of the stem becomes ie under stress: pierdo, pierdes, pierde, pierden in the present, pierda, pierdas, pierda, pierdan in the present subjunctive, and the commands pierde, pierda, pierdan. Nosotros and vosotros keep e: perdemos, perdéis, perdamos, perdáis. There is no stem change in the preterite (perdí, perdió, perdieron) or in the gerund (perdiendo), and the other tenses are regular too: perdía, perderé, perdido.
Conjugated the same way: entender, defender, encender, atender.
Common mistakes with perder
que yo perda / que nosotros pierdamos→que yo pierda / que nosotros perdamos
The present subjunctive follows the same stress rule as the present: ie in pierda, pierdas, pierdan, plain e in perdamos, perdáis. The commands copy it: no pierdas.
Perdí en el centro.→Me perdí en el centro.
Perder is to lose something. "To get lost" is the reflexive perderse: me pierdo, te pierdes, se pierde.
Perdimos a Brasil.→Perdimos contra Brasil.
The opponent you lose to takes contra, not a. Perder a alguien means to lose that person: Perdió a su padre.
When to use perder
Perder covers "to lose" (an object, a game), "to miss" (a train, a chance) and "to waste" (time). Perderse is "to get lost" and also "to miss out on": Te perdiste la fiesta.

How to remember perder
perder[pehr-DEHR] sounds like the English “pear there”. Picture this:
“The pear was there!” — you lose it and find only a bitten shadow of it.
A sound-alike plus a vivid scene is the keyword method: the sound pulls the meaning along. How it works.
