What is irregular about tener
Tener is irregular in four places. In the present, yo is tengo, which also gives the subjunctive tenga, and the stem vowel changes e → ie where it is stressed: tienes, tiene, tienen, but tenemos, tenéis. The preterite uses the stem tuv- with unaccented endings: tuve, tuviste, tuvo. The future and conditional replace the e of the infinitive with d: tendré, tendría. The tú command is ten.
Conjugated the same way: mantener, obtener, contener, detener.
Common mistakes with tener
Soy 20 años.→Tengo 20 años.
Age is something you "have" in Spanish, and so are hunger, thirst, cold and fear: tengo hambre, tengo frío, tengo miedo.
Tengo hacer la tarea.→Tengo que hacer la tarea.
"To have to" is tener que + infinitive; without que the phrase is incomplete.
tení, tenió→tuve, tuvo
The preterite does not take the regular -er endings; it switches to the stem tuv-.
When to use tener
Tener is "to have" in the sense of owning or holding. The "have" of compound tenses (I have eaten) is a different verb, haber: he comido.
Tener in sentences
Tengo dos hermanos. I have two brothers.
¿Tienes hambre? Are you hungry?
