What is irregular about ver
Ver keeps the e of the infinitive in three places where a regular verb would drop it: the present yo form veo, the whole imperfect (veía, veías, veía…) and the present subjunctive (vea, veas…). The preterite has regular endings, but the one-syllable forms carry no accent: vi, vio. The past participle is visto. The future and conditional are regular: veré, vería.
Do not confuse: one form, two verbs
ve — also ir: ve here is él, present; for ir it is tú, imperative.
ven — also venir: ven here is ellos, present; for venir it is tú, imperative.
viste — also vestir: viste here is tú, preterite; for vestir it is él, present.
Common mistakes with ver
ví, vió→vi, vio
As a rule, one-syllable words carry no written accent, so vi and vio are spelled without one, just like fui, fue, di and dio.
he veído→he visto
The participle is irregular: visto. It stays the same in every compound tense: había visto, habré visto.
Veo María.→Veo a María.
When the direct object is a specific person, Spanish puts a before it. With things there is no a: Veo la casa.
When to use ver
Ver is "to see" and also "to watch" films, series and television: ver una película, ver la tele. Mirar is "to look at" something on purpose. A ver is the everyday "let's see".
Ver in sentences
Sin gafas no veo nada. I can't see anything without my glasses.
¿Viste el partido anoche? Did you watch the match last night?
De niños veíamos dibujos animados los sábados. As children we used to watch cartoons on Saturdays.
Ya veremos. We'll see.
Llámame cuando veas el mensaje. Call me when you see the message.
