What is irregular about ir
Ir borrows its forms from three different roots: the present is voy, vas, va, vamos, vais, van, the imperfect is iba, ibas, iba, and the preterite fui, fuiste, fue… is identical to that of ser. The gerund is yendo, the present subjunctive is vaya. Of the tenses, only the future and conditional are regular: iré, iría.
Do not confuse: one form, two verbs
fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron… — also ser: fui here is yo, preterite; for ser it is yo, preterite.
ve — also ver: ve here is tú, imperative; for ver it is él, present.
Common mistakes with ir
Voy en la playa.→Voy a la playa.
Movement towards a place takes a. With the masculine article it contracts: a + el = al (Voy al cine).
Voy comer.→Voy a comer.
The near future is ir + a + infinitive; the a cannot be dropped.
iendo→yendo
The i of the ending -iendo is written y at the start of a word and after a vowel: yendo, like leyendo and oyendo.
When to use ir
Ir is "to go" away from where the speaker is; coming towards the speaker is venir. Irse (me voy, te vas) means "to leave": Me voy means "I'm off". For "let's go" Spanish uses the present vamos; the subjunctive vayamos is rare in this sense.
Ir in sentences

Antes iba al gimnasio todos los días. I used to go to the gym every day.
¡Vamos! Let's go!
