What is irregular about entender
Only the stressed e changes to ie, and it is the second e of the stem: entiendo, entiendes, entiende, entienden in the present and entienda, entiendas, entiendan in the present subjunctive. Nosotros and vosotros keep e in both: entendemos, entendéis, entendamos, entendáis. Every other tense is regular, including the preterite (entendí, entendió) and the gerund entendiendo.
Conjugated the same way: perder, defender, encender, atender.
Common mistakes with entender
No entendo.→No entiendo.
With the stress on the stem, e becomes ie. Entendemos and entendéis are stressed on the ending and stay as they are.
entiendí, entiendió→entendí, entendió
The preterite is stressed on the ending, so there is no ie. Unlike stem-changing -ir verbs, an -er verb changes nothing in this tense.
No entiendo mi jefe.→No entiendo a mi jefe.
When it is a person you do not understand, Spanish needs the personal a. With things there is none: No entiendo la pregunta.
When to use entender
Entender and comprender both mean "to understand" and are usually interchangeable; entender is the everyday choice. Entender de + noun is "to know about": No entiendo de vinos.
Entender in sentences
No entiendo la pregunta. I don't understand the question.
¿Entendiste la película? Did you understand the film?
Al principio no entendía nada. At first I didn't understand anything.
Cuando seas mayor, lo entenderás. When you're older, you'll understand.
Habla despacio para que te entiendan. Speak slowly so that they understand you.
How to remember entender
entender[ehn-tehn-DEHR] sounds like the English “intend her”. Picture this:
You finally understand what she intends: the suitcase by the door said it first.
A sound-alike plus a vivid scene is the keyword method: the sound pulls the meaning along. How it works.
