What is irregular about ser
The main forms of ser follow no pattern: the present is soy, eres, es, somos, sois, son, and the imperfect (era, eras…) is one of only three irregular imperfects in Spanish. The preterite fui, fuiste, fue… is shared letter for letter with ir, so only context tells "I was" from "I went". The future and conditional are regular (seré, sería), and the present subjunctive is built on se-: sea, seas, sea.
Do not confuse: one form, two verbs
fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron… — also ir: fui here is yo, preterite; for ir it is yo, preterite.
sé — also saber: sé here is tú, imperative; for saber it is yo, present.
Common mistakes with ser
Soy cansado.→Estoy cansado.
A state that can change (tired, busy, ill) takes estar. Ser is for what something is: identity, origin, profession, time.
Yo fue a casa. / Él fui médico.→Yo fui… / Él fue…
Fui is "I", fue is "he, she, usted". The pair is easy to swap because in regular -ar verbs the -é ending belongs to yo (hablé).
fuí, fué→fui, fue
As a rule, one-syllable words carry no written accent. The accented spellings fuí and fué turn up in older books, but in modern Spanish they are errors.
When to use ser
Both ser and estar mean "to be". Ser says what something is (Es médico, Es de Perú, Son las dos); estar says how or where it is right now (Está cansado, Está en casa). Some adjectives change meaning with the verb: ser listo is "to be clever", estar listo is "to be ready".
Ser in sentences
Soy de México. I'm from Mexico.
Son las tres de la tarde. It's three in the afternoon.
La película fue muy buena. The film was very good.
De niño era muy tímido. As a child I was very shy.
Quiero que seas feliz. I want you to be happy.
How to remember ser
ser[sehr] sounds like the English “sear”. Picture this:
A chef SEARS meat on a hot pan, saying 'this will always BE delicious no matter what'.
A sound-alike plus a vivid scene is the keyword method: the sound pulls the meaning along. How it works.
