What is irregular about jugar
Jugar is the only Spanish verb with the change u → ue: under stress the present is juego, juegas, juega, juegan, but jugamos, jugáis. Before e the g is written gu to keep its hard sound: jugué in the preterite (then jugaste, jugó) and the whole present subjunctive — juegue, juegues, juguemos, juguéis. The imperfect, future and conditional are regular: jugaba, jugaré, jugaría.

A game or sport is introduced by a plus the article: jugar al tenis, jugar a las cartas. In Latin America you will also hear jugar fútbol, with neither.
