What is irregular about pedir

The e of the stem becomes i wherever it is stressed in the present: pido, pides, pide, piden, but pedimos, pedís. The same i appears in the third person of the preterite (pidió, pidieron), in every form of the present subjunctive (pida, pidamos, pidáis), in the imperfect subjunctive (pidiera) and in the gerund pidiendo. The imperfect, future and conditional are regular: pedía, pediré, pediría.

Conjugated the same way: servir, repetir, vestir, medir, despedir.

Common mistakes with pedir

  • Le pedí dónde vive. Le pregunté dónde vive.

Pedir is to ask for something you want to get. Asking a question, that is, asking for information, is preguntar.

  • Pedí por un café. Pedí un café.

What you ask for is a direct object with no preposition: pedir ayuda, pedir la cuenta. The por is carried over from English "ask for".

  • pedió, pedieron pidió, pidieron

In the preterite only the third person takes i. Yo, tú, nosotros and vosotros keep e: pedí, pediste, pedimos, pedisteis.

When to use pedir

Pedir is also what you do in a café or restaurant: ¿Qué vas a pedir? means "What are you going to order?" Asking someone to do something is pedir que + subjunctive, and pedir prestado is "to borrow".

Pedir in sentences

Siempre pido café con leche.
I always order coffee with milk.
Ella pidió la cuenta.
She asked for the bill.
Pediremos una pizza para cenar.
We'll order a pizza for dinner.
Pide ayuda si la necesitas.
Ask for help if you need it.
No hace falta que pidas perdón.
You don't need to apologise.

How to remember pedir

pedir [peh-DEER] sounds like the English “peddler”. Picture this:

A peddler knocks on doors, holding out his hat and asking every stranger for a coin or two.

A sound-alike plus a vivid scene is the keyword method: the sound pulls the meaning along. How it works.
