What is irregular about empezar
The second e becomes ie under stress in the present: empiezo, empiezas, empieza, empiezan, but empezamos, empezáis. Before e the z is written c: empecé in the preterite (then empezaste, empezó) and the whole present subjunctive — empiece, empieces, empecemos, empecéis. The imperfect, future and conditional are regular: empezaba, empezaré, empezaría.
Empiezo estudiar mañana.→Empiezo a estudiar mañana.
"To start doing" needs a before the infinitive: empezar a + infinitive.
empezé→empecé
Z is not written before e, so the yo form of the preterite switches to c. The other persons keep z: empezaste, empezó.
La película se empieza a las ocho.→La película empieza a las ocho.
When something begins, empezar takes no se: la película empieza, el curso empezó. The same goes for comenzar.
When to use empezar
Comenzar means the same and is conjugated the same way; it sounds a little more formal. Empezar a + infinitive is "to start doing", empezar por + infinitive is "to start by doing".
