What is irregular about poder
In the present the stressed o becomes ue: puedo, puedes, puede, pueden, but podemos, podéis; the present subjunctive follows the same pattern (pueda, podamos). The preterite uses the stem pud- with unaccented endings: pude, pudiste, pudo. The future and conditional drop the e: podré, podría. The gerund is pudiendo.
Common mistakes with poder
poderé, podería→podré, podría
The future and conditional drop the e of the infinitive: podré, podrás, podrá.
No puedo nadar.→No sé nadar.
If you never learned, the verb is saber. No puedo nadar means something stops you today: a cold, an injured arm.
pudí, pudió→pude, pudo
With the stem pud- the yo and él forms end in plain -e and -o, with no accent mark, because the stress falls on the stem: pude, pudo.
When to use poder
Poder is ability that depends on circumstances, or permission: ¿Puedo entrar? In the preterite, pude means "managed to" and no pude "failed to", while podía only says that the possibility existed. Puede que + subjunctive means "maybe": Puede que llueva.

Ven cuando puedas. Come when you can.
