What is irregular about seguir
Seguir changes like pedir, e → i: sigues, sigue, siguen in the present, siguió, siguieron in the preterite, siguiendo in the gerund. In addition, the u of gu is only written before e and i, so it disappears before o and a: yo sigo and the whole present subjunctive — siga, sigas, sigamos, sigáis. Seguimos and seguís, the imperfect seguía and the future seguiré are regular.
Conjugated the same way: conseguir, perseguir, proseguir.
Common mistakes with seguir
yo siguo→yo sigo
Before o and a the letter g is hard on its own, so the silent u is dropped: sigo, siga, sigan.
Sigo a estudiar español.→Sigo estudiando español.
"To keep doing" or "to still do" is seguir + gerund. An infinitive, with or without a, is not possible here.
Sigo no entendiendo.→Sigo sin entender.
"Still not doing" is expressed with seguir sin + infinitive, not with no in front of the gerund.
When to use seguir
Seguir is both "to follow" and "to go on". With a gerund it often translates as "still": Sigo trabajando aquí is "I still work here". In directions, sigue todo recto means "go straight on".
