What is irregular about volver
The stressed o becomes ue in the present: vuelvo, vuelves, vuelve, vuelven, but volvemos, volvéis. The present subjunctive follows the same pattern: vuelva, vuelvas, vuelvan, but volvamos, volváis. The preterite is completely regular (volví, volvió, volvieron), and so is the gerund volviendo. The one form to learn separately is the participle: vuelto.
Conjugated the same way: devolver, resolver, envolver.
Common mistakes with volver
he volvido→he vuelto
The participle is irregular, and the other verbs in -olver copy it: devuelto, envuelto, resuelto.
Vuelvo el libro mañana.→Devuelvo el libro mañana.
Volver is to come back yourself. Giving or taking a thing back is devolver.
Volví llamar.→Volví a llamar.
Volver a + infinitive means "to do something again", and the a cannot be left out.
When to use volver
Volver is "to come back" or "to go back"; regresar means the same. The reflexive volverse is "to turn round" or, with an adjective, "to become": Se volvió loco, "He went mad".
Volver in sentences

How to remember volver
volver[bohl-BEHR] sounds like the English “vole where”. Picture this:
A vole scurries away then turns back, returning to the exact hole where it started.
A sound-alike plus a vivid scene is the keyword method: the sound pulls the meaning along. How it works.
